Everything You Need to Know with WeChat Malaysia 2022 (Updated)

Introduction

WeChat Pay is the most popular payment system mainly used in China. Ever since its launch date in 2011, it has become an essential in their everyday lives. China uses WeChat for communication, online banking, day-to-day purchases, and even in their everyday fare. WeChat is an advanced system that allows any user to handle every transaction with their fingertips. How nice it must be to get everything you need by simply using your phone? Welcoming a cashless culture seems very tempting at any given time.

However, WeChat Pay is most commonly used in China because there is no competition for the app. It can be very easy to use WeChat inside the country, but it is hard for them to venture outside their mainland. There are a lot of messaging apps that people find useful outside China. Like Japan, for example, they already have their own app called Line.

Although the said countries have been lost causes for WeChat, China has focused its attention on other countries that have not developed online payment systems yet. That is where Malaysia comes into light. The country being home to a significant number of Chinese nationals makes it a perfect market for WeChat Pay to launch.

The launch of WeChat in Malaysia proves that the system works effectively on other countries, and may be the start of the rise of digitized payment all over the world.

WeChat Pay in Malaysia

Before the WeChat era, Malaysians already used a variety of e-wallets for their online payments such as Samsung Pay, Vcash, and Alipay. But with the Chinese population in Malaysia, the launch of WeChat Pay was highly anticipated. It was known to change the whole payment system in China for the better, and we expect the same in this country.

For the past two years, Tencent Group has been testing WeChat pay on selected users in Malaysia to prove the effectiveness of the app. However, with the limited transfer currencies in the country, it was hard to determine whether or not it will be a hit.

Now that the payment system has finally taken off, it should finally be compatible with most of the credit and debit cards. It can also be tied to foreign credit cards for a more efficient transaction you can enjoy.

Not only that, local banks also agreed to team up with WeChat Pay as well. Hong Leong Bank has already enabled merchants to accept payment through WeChat since 2017. Since then, a lot of other local banks have followed suit.

You may experience limited transactions with WeChat Pay at this moment, but it is promised that the payment system will extend to more than mobile top ups and bus ticket payments in the very near future.

Payment methods

There are two choices to pay using WeChat Pay, you can use Quick Pay or In-App Payment. Here is how you can use the payment methods.

  1. Quick Pay

This is the easiest mode of payment using the app. Vendors provide a QR code for the customers to scan using their mobile phones and that will automatically let them pay for the product or service they have purchased

Additionally, the customers can use the QR code scanner to view the products they wish to purchase without actually having to go through the different products displayed in the store.

  1. In-App Payment

If there are no QR codes available in the store or if the customer wishes to pay using a different app, the vendor can authorize WeChat to process payments made through other apps. This alternative comes in handy when the wallet of the customer does not have enough balance to pay for the products or services they have purchased.

You can use the app for bus tickets, cinema seats, and you can also top up your mobile prepaid via WeChat Pay.
