Gynaecologist – What, When, and Where

gynaecologist

Gynaecology, the science of women, is a science that many women know frightening little about. This epidemic of lack of awareness and knowledge has led to a crisis where women are unable to communicate what is wrong with them because they do not know what is truly wrong with them. In many cases, women don’t even realize that something is not ticking properly until it becomes a serious threat or is no longer curable.

This culture of unawareness stems from decades of shame that surrounded the very condition of being female.

Women are barely educated in the basics of gynecology before they are sent out into the world equipped with nothing but vague understandings of their health and deeply ingrained shame. These women suffer in silence because asking a question about their “female issues” is embarrassing and will bring nothing but horrid humiliation to them and their family.

While the narrative is slowly, but surely, changing, many women are still beyond ill-equipped to deal with their gynaecological issues due to a lack of awareness.

While a few simple keystrokes could easily rectify this shortcoming, the vast amount of multiple sources of information on the internet, each telling them the exact opposite of the last source, can be daunting and a challenge to navigate.

Below is a starter guide to provide women with the basics of what gynaecology is and why it is absolutely necessary.

Gynaecology at a Glance

Gynaecology, often known as gynecology, is a medical specialty that deals with the health of a woman’s reproductive system. Since the specialties of a gynaecologist and an obstetrician overlap in many areas, almost all modern obstetricians are also gynaecologists

What is a Gynaecologist?

A gynaecologist is a doctor who focuses on the reproductive health of women. They identify and treat problems with the female reproductive system. The uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and breasts are all included. A gynaecologist can help anyone with female organs. Eighty percent of individuals who see one are between the ages of 15 and 45.

What does a Gynaecologist do?

Pelvic exams, Pap tests, cancer screenings, and diagnosis and treatment for vaginal infections are among the reproductive and sexual health treatments provided by gynaecologists. Endometriosis, infertility, ovarian cysts, and pelvic pain are among the reproductive system illnesses they identify and treat. People with ovarian, cervical, and other reproductive malignancies may be treated by them. Obstetricians are gynaecologists who provide treatment during pregnancy and childbirth. An OB-GYN is a gynaecologist who also specializes in obstetrics.

When to see a Gynaecologist?

  1. Due for a Checkup

To maintain reproductive health, it’s critical to see a gynaecologist on a regular basis. These visits should begin between the ages of 13 and 15, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. A gynaecologist may utilize this visit to screen for concerns including cervical or breast cancer, depending on their health history and age. The well visit is also an opportunity to discuss reproductive health issues with the gynaecologist, such as birth control.

  1. Experiencing Discomfort in the Pelvic Region

Lower belly pain, often known as pelvic pain, could indicate an issue with the reproductive organs. Menstrual cramps, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and ectopic pregnancy are all common causes of pelvic pain. While pelvic pain in women is often dismissed by general practitioners as nothing but regular period cramps, a gynaecologist is bound to investigate it further.

  1. Concerns Regarding Periods and Pregnancy

If one has changes in their monthly period, such as unusual pain or bleeding, they should immediately see a gynaecologist. The gynaecologist can help them figure out if they are going through menopause or if its a more serious health issue.

Gynecologists can also assist one with pregnancy-related inquiries, such as how to avoid becoming pregnant and what to do if one suspects they are pregnant.

  1. Discharge Concerns

If one experiences a discharge that is different from their normal vaginal discharge, they should see a gynaecologist immediately. The gynaecologist can determine the cause of an odd discharge or odour and provide treatment options.

What to Expect when Going to a Gynaecologist

One’s reproductive system will be examined both internally and externally by the gynaecologist. They’ll go over the patient’s breasts and look for lumps or cysts.

The vulva, which is positioned outside of the vagina, will then be examined.

An internal pelvic exam is usually the following step. The doctor will examine the cervix with a speculum, which is a specific equipment that allows the doctor to see within the vagina.

A gynaecologist uses a speculum, a tool that the doctor puts into the vagina to see inside the body. It helps the doctor see the cervix, which is placed between the vagina and the uterus, by widening the vagina.

A Pap smear is a procedure that the gynaecologist may perform during the pelvic exam. It allows the doctor to take a sample of cervix cells to check for infection.

To check for any problems, the doctor may press on the abdomen and pelvic, as well as put a gloved finger into the patient’s rectum.

If the gynaecologist discovers that one has a medical problem or condition, they may treat the patient immediately or send them to a specialist. Medications, surgery, or a wait-and-see approach may also be used, depending on the condition.
