Manufacturing and Commodities in Malaysia’s Chemical Industry

Malaysia’s chemicals sector benefits from the country’s abundance of natural resources. Since gaining its independence in the mid-20th century, the country’s economy has shifted from one based on commodities to one that is centered around science and technology.

Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia that is divided into two sections of comparable size by the South China Sea: Peninsular Malaysia, which borders Thailand to the north, and East Malaysia, which is located on the island of Borneo. Peninsular Malaysia is the larger of the two regions. With an abundance of natural resources and tremendous biodiversity in the tropical rainforests that cover a large portion of the country, it has plenty to offer.

Malaysia’s economy is the third-largest in Southeast Asia (after Indonesia and Thailand) and the 35th-largest in the world, according to the World Bank. The petrochemicals and oleochemicals industries are the key products of the Malaysian chemicals industry, which contributes significantly to the country’s gross domestic product. Fuels (22 percent of exports and 16 percent of imports), chemicals (5 percent and 7 percent), plastics and rubber (7 percent and 5 percent), and vegetable byproducts, particularly palm oil (8 percent and 3 percent) account for the majority of the country’s exports and imports.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, oil was discovered in what is now known as East Malaysia. After discovering oil reserves in 1910, the Shell Transport and Trading Co. (later known as Sarawak Shell) began developing them by building the world’s first crude oil refinery in Miri, Sarawak, in 1914. Following the discovery of significant oil reserves in Peninsular Malaysia in 1978, the oil and gas industry quickly grew to become a significant contributor to the Malaysian economy.

Malaysia’s oil and gas sector is primarily responsible for the production of natural gas, petroleum products, and petrochemical goods. The country’s proven oil reserves are ranked 34th in the world, and its proven gas reserves are ranked 21st.

It is the world’s second-biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and it is home to one of the world’s largest LNG production plants, which is located in Bintulu and has a production capacity of 23.3 million metric tones per year. Oil and gas drilling operations are concentrated in the Malay Basin, Penyu Basin, Sarawak Basin, and Sabah Basin, all of which are rich in natural resources.
