Netflix Malaysia: The Best Shows To Watch When You’re Bored

I feel like, in times like these, we need to find ways to occupy ourselves so that we do not need to go out that much. Apps like Spotify, Youtube, Iflix and other media platforms have become our best friends. Especially the one and only, Netflix. Netflix has provided an endless list of shows, movies, documentaries and more in Malaysia so that we won’t run out of things to watch.

Unfortunately, even though there is an endless list, we still have a hard time choosing. For instance, I prefer to watch something while I eat. So, while I scroll through Netflix, I’d snack on whatever I’m eating and eventually, I’d realize that by the time I decided on something to watch, the food would already be finished.

Scene from “Behind Her Eyes”

There’s a reason behind this actually. There is a very little amount of people who are decisive and know exactly what they want. Just as with anything else in life, a lot of people are indecisive. Endless questions like “where do I want to eat today?” or “should I do this or that first?” and especially, “what do I want to watch?”. I’m sure you’d go through this sort of thought process: “Hm, that seems interesting… Maybe there’s something better. Wait no, I want to watch the first one” then, “but maybe there’s something better that I could watch now”. Thus, it goes on in that cycle.

To help you out a little bit, I’ve got a few of the best shows that are available on Netflix in Malaysia. Hopefully, this would help you decide!

Disclaimer: this is based on my own preferences, I feel like these are good shows.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Netflix shows Malaysia

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of the best comedy TV shows on Netflix, available in Malaysia. If you like long-term shows, then this is a good choice. With tasteful jokes that’ll make you laugh and a lot of funny scenarios, this is a good show to sort of bring up your mood. It’s been going on since 2013 up till now and there are 7 seasons out currently. Every episode is on Netflix and you can watch it on your own time. The thing about Brooklyn Nine-Nine is that they make you feel like you’re a part of the family. You’d get their inside jokes, know their traditions in the police precinct and you’d be touched by the meaningful moments too. So if you’ve been contemplating on whether to watch it or not, this is your sign, watch it!

Conversations With A Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes

Netflix shows Malaysia

If you like true crime stories, you might like this short series too. I’m a big true crime fan myself and I find it very captivating to find out about a lot of different serial killers (that is not weird at all, I swear). Nonetheless, aside from true crime documentaries I can watch on Youtube, Netflix has a few good ones. The Ted Bundy Tapes is one of them. If you feel like the movie about Ted Bundy, “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” was accurate, this short docu-series goes into it deeper, with tapes of Bundy talking to a reporter about what went through his thought process. The big deal about Ted Bundy was the fact that he was pleading innocent the whole way. Up until this reporter got him talking in a third person’s perspective, which is really smart of him. This is what got him to talk about what went through the mind of someone who would do the things he did. One of the most captivating and enlightening shows for you to watch on Netflix in Malaysia.

It’s Okay To Not Be Okay

Netflix shows Malaysia

For all you Kim Soo-Hyun fans, this is one of the great Netflix shows available in Malaysia with him as the main character. Alongside the beautiful Seo Yea-Ji and the talented Oh Jung-Se, this show brings us along their journey of finding themselves. With meaningful lessons as well as heart-touching scenes, this show sort of breaks the norms of usual K-dramas and gives us a good show. What was attractive about the series was that it really taught me a lot about how to take care of my mental health as well as how important that is. We follow the three main characters in their ups and downs and I can say that it got me feeling a lot of emotions.

Behind Her Eyes

Netflix shows Malaysia

With twists galore, Behind Her Eyes is a story of mystery, thriller and a lot of lucid dreaming. From the start of this short series, you’d already be wondering “what happened?” or “what caused that?” and trust me, you’d only find out if you watch the whole thing. In short, it is the story of a man who does not feel the same way he did in the beginning with his wife. They show us how the husband treats her very cold behind closed curtains yet flips the switch in front of a crowd. Also how he finds love in another. But it wouldn’t be fair of me to spill all the details. It’s just so much more that you’d have to see for yourself.

Itaewon Class

Netflix shows Malaysia

Going deep into the vicious world of the food industry, Itaewon Class is a story of underdogs starting with a small cafe trying to make it big in the world of big food companies. It is one of the best Netflix shows that I’ve watched in Malaysia. One of the things that had me hooked to the show is how they show the struggles of being in the food industry. The not-so-nice customers, the costs, the struggle to find customers as well as how to keep it going. What happens in the show is for me to already know and for you to find out when you watch it. I can’t give any spoilers.

The Haunting Of Hill House/Bly Manor

The Haunting of Hill House

Both of these short horror shows on Netflix were directed by the one and only, Mike Flanagan. Known for directing some of the best horror films and TV series, both The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor managed to capture a lot of people’s attention. Let’s talk about Hill House first. This 10-episode show tells us the story of five siblings. These five siblings go through hell (figuratively) and back while trying to defend themselves from the entities that haunt them.

On the other hand, Bly Manor is a story of a family that is tied to their home by an entity that cast a curse on it. The interesting thing about both these shows is that they are suitable for anyone who would love to delve into the world of horror shows but are too scared. This is because they have little to no jump scares at all while keeping it as creepy and haunting as it can be. Both these shows give you chills while having so much meaning to every episode. If you’d like to watch other films by Mike Flanagan, I’d suggest Before I Wake, Gerald’s Game and Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Since we’re all mostly stuck in quarantine, we have to find a way to occupy ourselves while we’re at home. It’s up to your preference, how you do that. But just know that watching Netflix shows in Malaysia does not necessarily mean you’re unproductive. We’re all trying our best and sometimes we just need a break with Netflix.
