Education is the most important thing in life, especially in childhood. As for education, does choosing private school and public school matter? Education is an important part of raising children and preparing them for a successful life. For most families, finding the right school environment for your kids is not as easy. This can be a problem especially enrolling in a local public school. With the information we have today about 21st century difference learning and skills, not all schools can adequately meet the needs of every student.
The importance of education to the people in turn is to be able to further improve the quality of education in the country. If many people are knowledgeable, then of course some of them will be teachers in schools and institutions of higher learning. These educators can certainly guide the younger generation to become knowledgeable and skilled citizens. Therefore, the quality of education in the country will continue to grow and improve.
In this post, does choosing public and private school really matter? Are you someone who is considering whether private schools are better than public schools? If you want to know more about the differences and similarities between private and public schools, I’ve outlined some of the differences and similarities for you here.
The Quality of The Education Itself
First and foremost, government schools have been experimenting with educational plans since 2014 when Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga was introduced. Children are impactful when these changes of educational plans happen as they need to catch up and obey the plans. It can be exhausting for any child.
In terms of class sizes, public schools have a larger student to teacher ratio and have a larger class size. This is due to the insufficient fundings or budget cuts by the government. It costs a lot for the education sector. Usually, there are a total of 30 students in a class. Communication between teacher and students could be ineffective. A teacher’s capacity is limited to give full attention to each student. Overall, would the quality of the education that a child is supposed to get be fulfilled in the classroom space? Not all children are capable of catching up with the overwhelming everyday school life.
Private schools have the option where they do not have to adhere to the respective state standards. They have the freedom to choose their own curriculum rather than following the state standards. They can deliver a more effective education plan that fits the student’s capability. Then, private schools typically have smaller class sizes and can have as many as 10 to 15 students in a classroom. Lower student total in a class can mean more effective interactions for students and teachers. Therefore, the communication is more effective in contrast with public school students. As private schools do not have to abide by state syllabus about what should be taught, they can offer unique and specialized programs. Schools often offer highly advanced programs in science or the arts.
The immersive environment also means many private school students only attend school for more hours a day than public school students because private schools offer after-school programs and longer schedules. This means productivity for the students.
For instance, when asking questions, students in private school are more beneficial in communicating. The information exchange is more advantageous.
Public schools require teachers to be certified in the state, subjects and expertise in which they teach. Certification requirements may vary and are determined by each state in Malaysia as that falls in the state jurisdiction.
Private schools are subjective in their need to be certified by teachers, some do not require certification, and others may require certification but may be open for certification from different countries.
The school fees for public schools are more affordable than private schools. This is one of the main reasons why most parents prefer to send their children to public school.
This is because the federal government allocates a certain amount of funds to each state for education. The state government gets funding through income taxes collected, lotteries and even property taxes. Local authorities can also contribute through tax funds.
Private schools are responsible for their own funds and they get most of their funding through student tuition, fundraising events, gifts and donations from donors. The school fare is more expensive. Not all classes and strata afford to pay for the fees. Generally, the fees are collected monthly.
As the government does yearly budgeting, schools receive a certain amount from the government. Schools need to manage the money to spend on. With that money, school maintenance, tools, equipment and infrastructure could be supported with that budget. In Peninsular Malaysia, most of the public schools are in good condition. At least, it is comfortable enough for the kids to study and have the basic infrastructure that they need.
However, in East Malaysia, some of the public schools are facing a crisis such as incomplete basic infrastructure. With some of the students living in the rural area, dormitories are needed. It will be easier for them to go to school. In addition, with Covid-19 pandemic, Teaching and Learning at Home (PdPR) sessions have become harder. Pending State Assemblywoman (ADUN) from DAP, Violet Yong said that the federal government has failed to improve the quality of education in the last 20 months.
With the high fees, comes the accommodation for the students to enjoy. You are paying for the high quality education alongside the infrastructure. Most private schools have gyms, swimming pools, badminton courts and tennis courts. Even though their field is slightly different, it is not as muddy as a public school field. There are also lots of top private schools in Malaysia.
Education as Tools
In addition, educated people can also help to develop the country. History has shown that developed countries have knowledgeable people. For example, countries like Japan, South Korea and the United States have brilliant people who can create new things to develop their country. Therefore, with the existence of knowledgeable citizens, then Malaysia can become a more developed country one day. WIth sagacity and erudition, education is our hope.
Is It Really Different?
Yes, indeed public school and private school are different from one another. Overall, the syllabus, school hours, schedule, environment, teacher and extra-curricular are different.
Which Is The Best School?
It is really hard to tell which is the best school. Both schools have their own advantages. However, it is up to the parents decision as well. If you can afford private school then why not consider choosing the best school that will suit your children’s interests and benefits. If you can’t afford private school, public school is a good option too. You could consider a tutor and tuition for a more in-depth learning session.
Things To Keep In Mind
Remember, as a parent, you are responsible for your children’s education as well. No matter what school you are sending your children, get to know and participate in their studies as well. Do not pressure your children’s academic results but rather guide them to be a good student. Flying colors result is what parents desire but keep in mind about their mental health and well-being too. Research for the best private school in KL before sending them to one.
